If you’ll allow me a suggestion, really, if you haven’t read Death Note yet, give it a chance ! This manga belongs to the very select “cult” family like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure for instance, several other mangas will be occasionally referring to them or parodiating the characters…
And, putting aside the “cult” part, even if the ending seems to have reflected the tiredness of the artist (frankly, it was weak, don’t you think ?), it’s still a damn good reading to do !
